How to make Nethili fish kulambu without tamarind


To prepare masala paste:

Oil: 2 to 3 tbsp
Peppercorns: 1 tbsp
Chopped Green chilli: 2 nos
Shallots: 5 to 6
Ginger: Few pieces chopped
Garlic: 4 to 5 pods
Tomatoes: 3 chopped
Chilli powder: 1 tbsp
Coriander powder: 2 tbsp
Turmeric powder: 1/2 tbsp
Dessicated coconut or grated coconut: a cup
Salt: as required
Required water

To prepare fish curry:

Oil: 2 to 3 tbsp
Mustard seeds: 1/2 tbsp

Cleaned nethili(anchovies)fish: 1/2 kg
Salt: as Required
Chopped coriander and curry leaves
Required water


Into a heated saucepan add oil, peppercorns, garlic, ginger, green chillies, shallots

Saute it well until it softens.

Now add chopped tomatoes and add little salt.

Saute it until it’s cooked well.

Now add masalas such as chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder.

Saute everything well until its raw smell goes away.

Now add little water to it and cook.

Finally add dessicated coconut to it.

Combine it well in the masalas.

Now it’s time to grind all the masalas into a fine paste.

Grind all the masalas into a fine paste without adding water.

To prepare fish curry 

Into a heated kadai.
Add oil and 1/2 tbsp mustard
Allow it to splutter well.

Now add masala paste to it.

Cook it for sometime. Now add required water to it.

Allow the gravy to boil.

Once the gravy starts boil add cleaned anchovies(nethili) to it.

Add required salt.
Close it with the lid and cook it for 20 to 25 mins.
Once nethili fish curry is cooked well. Ad chopped curry leaves and coriander.

Serve it with steamed rice.
