How to make Kathirikai murungakkai sambar

  • 200 grams Toor dal
Other Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • ½ tbsp mustard seeds
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • ¼ tbsp asafoetida
  • 1 tbsp chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp sambar powder
  • 2 Drumsticks
  • 3 Brinjals
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • half a lemon size Tamarind
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp jaggery (optional)
  • 4 sprigs Coriander leaves
Method:
  • Boil 200 grams (3/4 cup) toor dal with 3 cup of water in a pressure cooker for about 5 whistles in simmer. Set aside. Soak half lemon size tamarind in one of cup of water for about 20 mins. Once tamarind was well soaked squeeze it with fingers top release all juices. Strain it with juice and set separate.
  • Now clean the drumsticks, peel away its outer skin as its skin is very hard. Chop it to 3 inch pieces and set separate.
  • Heat oil in a kadai until hot. Add in the mustard seeds wait until it crackle then add onion saute for few mins until its well sauteed then add tomatoes in order to cook tomatoes add little salt to make the tomatoes little mushy, add brinjal pieces and drumsticks saute well and add chilli powder, coriander powder, sambar powder and turmeric powder. Fry for 10 seconds until the raw smell goes away. Add mashed dal to the kadai.
  • Now add tamarind juice to it. Add salt and ¼ tbsp asafoetida and add salt to it. Cover it with a lid and cook it for 10 to 15 mins in medium flame until drumsticks are soft and tender.
  • Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
